A MassHealth lien does not mean the house cannot be sold

A recorded MassHealth lien on an inherited house is often not what it looks like. The house can still be sold.

In Massachusetts, a lien recorded while the owner was alive ends as a block on the title when that owner dies. MassHealth can still file a claim against the estate. That claim is not the same thing as the old lien, and a three-year limit is not the same thing as forgiveness. How it applies to a family is a question for a probate attorney they hire. This page does not apply the law to your house.

We work with a probate attorney who handles MassHealth lien questions. You hire her. Contact us and we will make the introduction.
